Vivaldi - Catone in Utica, RV 705 (Cangemi, Laszezkowski, Edwards, Jaroussky, Faraon, Bertini, La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, Malgoire) (2002)
CD1:75’01; CD2:72’00 | 727 MB

Catone is one of Vivaldi's last operas. The libretto by Metastio is a masterpiece in itself and is set during the Roman Civil War. The music from Act One has never been discovered. The conductor describes his reconstuction of the music in a fascinating portion of the liner notes. I was wholly convinced by his work that I would never have noticed if I had not read about it.
As a typical Vivaldi opera most of the scene is set by recitive and arias--- but what wonderful arias. His orchestration is lush and highly evocative of the words he is setting.
This live performance is performed welll by every cast member and the orchestra. Highly recommended for baroque opera lovers.

Vivaldi - Rosmira Fedele: pasticcio opera in 3 acts (arranged by Vivaldi), RV 731 (Gilbert Bezzina, Rossana Bertini, Jacek Laszczkowski) (2003)
CD1: 76’19; CD2: 61’40; CD3: 31’18 | 859 MB

Vivaldi's pasticcio opera Rosmira was composed for the carnival celebrations of 1738. The librettist of the text was Leo Stampiglia. Of the entire score, Vivaldi composed only the recitatives, three of the arias, two choruses, and one trio. The opening sinfonia was composed by Micheli, and consisted of three full movements. The rest of the set pieces were taken from works by Antonio Mazzoni, G.F. Handel, Pergolesi, Hasse, Vinci, and others. The aria borrowed from Handel was "Già risonar," taken from his opera Ezio. Vivaldi greatly altered the piece, changing the da capo structure completely, and altering the text and scoring. Handel's da capo structures were rather monumental and lengthy, and Vivaldi cut entire sections from this work to suit his needs. The climaxes of the acts tend to be grand in this opera. Act I closes with a battle scene which uses a large, laudatory chorus and trumpets, while Act II closes with a vocal ensemble. For a later production Vivaldi also adapted Micheli's sinfonia, and turned it into an introduction to the opening, laudatory chorus in praise of Partenope. He then used the opening choral material to end the final scene of the opera. The opening and closing choruses, along with the climaxes at the ends of the acts, help provide structural and thematic unity to the score. ~ Rita Laurance, Rovi
Since I first heard this album, the quality of recording and performance impressed me so much. ALl the arias are very delightful, skillful, soft, warm, and full of the fragrance of Vivaldi's musics. There is a kind of charming in all the instrumental and vocal works of Vivaldi, that is, a "cerebral inspiring" effect I suppose. I like to listen again and again, since it has some kind of activation effect in the brain, and makes me feel comfortable. The effect is different to Mozart's and Beethoven's, perhaps the neurologist should study it.

Just like the joy and surprise after the first time I listened to the sacred music of Vivaldi (the 10 discs conductd by Vittorio Negri), this first recorded opera has the same splendid feeling like the sacred music, except this opera is joyful other than sorrow that some sacred musics used to be.
